Marriage and Menopause

It's just my opinion, so you can agree or disagree, but it seems to me that a lot of marriages that end in divorce, happen while couples are going the stages of menopause.  Between the ages of mid-40s to mid-50s.

I have thought long and hard about this.

Women and Men, too(yes, I said Men), keep reading and I will explain, are both involved in this process.

First of all, if your married, you know everything that affects one, affects all. Example: You burn breakfast, you're pissed to start with, husband makes comment that makes you angrier, kids come in and being kids, they say the wrong thing, and now your mad at all of your family.  You can imagine how it usually goes from there.

Second, Men go thru their own menopausal process called "Andropause". Men lose testosterone as they age.

So the bodies of both men and women in their mid-40s start losing hormones.  Or maybe I should say, our bodies slow down the  production of hormones.

If you would like to learn more, I found this article that is easy to read.  What Is Menopause?  This causes all sorts of havoc in your body.

  • Moodswings
  • Depression
  • Memory Loss
  • Loss of Sexual Appetite
And if both partners in a relationship are suffering at the same time, it could let to arguments.  More arguments over a period of years, will probably end in divorce. Unless couples come to realize the issues causing the problems is menopause.

Both men and women need to talk more openly about what may be happening to their bodies and speak with your doctor and conditions at home.  There is treatment for hormone loss. HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy.

To insure your marriage survives Menopause. be prepared to apologize often. Try to spend quality time with your spouse.  Talk over stressful problems together.  Don't let problems come between you.

Remember marriage takes two people working together.  So, in the hope that more marriages will survive the transition from happy active hormones to slow, sluggish hormones, please remember to apologize for your mistakes, kiss and make-up can be fun, spend some time with your partner.

Here is a list of fun activities for you and your spouse to try:  Fun Activities

Menopausal Depression

Sometimes, it comes over you like a black wave of misery. Sucking the life right out of you.  You are not ready for it. You don;t know where it came from. You were happy just a second ago. All you know to that you feel like crying or screaming. All you want to do is crawl back under the covers and be left alone in your misery.

Does that sound familiar to you?  Can you hold your hand up and say " Me Too!"

If so you may be having symptoms of menopause. Depression  is a another signs of menopause.  It hasn't been a continuous problem for me.  But it effects all women differently. You can have very mild problems up to severe depression. Always talk with your physician about any problems you may be having.

But if you are like most women, you don't have the luxury of crawling back into bed and wallowing in your pain and misery.

The good thing is, it does not occur everyday. It comes and goes infrequently.

In case you have not read my other blog, Help Me Survive Menopause , menopause is a long process, lasting up to ten years. SORRY.  But some of the time you will hardly notice any symptoms.  Menopause is the process where your body begins to reduces  the amount of female hormones it produces.

There are a few things you can do to help with depression. Deep Breathing exercises.  There are a lot of  deep breathing exercise that you can try. Find one that works for you. Some places to look for them are:

     Women to Women

    Dr. Weil's Deep Breathing Exercises

     Breathing Techniques

Avoid stressful situations as much as possible.  Get plenty of sleep. Eat a well-balanced diet.

It is not healthy to  suppress all this emotion, you have to let it out. Have a good cry. Exercise. Buy a few foam balls and throw them or squeeze them.

If you are constantly depressed, please see a doctor. Remember you are not crazy, you are menopausal, your hormones are out of control. Think PMS anytime times ten.

It's your body, learn to control it. Don't let it control you.  Good Day.

Come back and read more blogs about Menopause. I will be adding a funny Stories about Menopause.

Hot Flash or Nuclear Overload

You are never going to be ready for a hot flash. It comes out at you when you least expect it.  I seem to have them more when I am over-stressed or working.

Hot flashes are caused by the changes in your hormone levels.  75% of all women will have some degree of hot flashes.   You may feel a sudden warmth spreads over your body. Me, personally, it is more like a forest fire.

There are triggers that can bring on hot flashes.

  Anxiety
  Lack of sleep
  Cigarette smoke

And you might try avoiding certain foods, caffeine, spicy foods, and alcohol.

Water! Give Me Water!

Hot Mama!
To stay cool, try wearing lighter material clothing,  run a fan at night and during the day. One of them battery-operated fans is good.

Deep breathing exercises at the beginning of a hot flash  will help.

You can talk with your doctor about hormone replacement therapy or common called HRT.  It can also help with other symptoms of menopause.  Hormone therapy carries some risks, including blood clots and gallbladder inflammation.

If you don't want to use Hormone replacement therapy, there are some natural and herbal medicines, you can try.

Black cohosh,  is said to relieve hot flash symptoms, but at this time there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. I have used it for a couple of years and for me it seemed to help.  But, it also seemed to cause irregular periods and heavier bleeding.  So use at your own risk.

If it helps any, men also go a form of menopause, commonly called Andropause Hot Flashes.  Male hot flashes are caused by a severe testosterone deficiency that can occur in andropause (male menopause) and in androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer.
